When I found out that we‚Äôd be interviewing June‚Äôs Diary, the first thing I did was memorize their names. I strategically correlated each girl‚Äôs name with her respective hairstyle in an attempt to not only impress them, but really impress them. Of course, once we met at CODA Lounge, one of Philly‚Äôs premiere music venues, which would eventually be filled with hundreds of fans for the opening night of their first tour, everything I had studied and prepared for left my memory. The girls were wrapping up another interview and all I could hear was music. They were singing acapella and it was one of the most beautifully harmonious things I‚Äôd heard in a while. Hearing them sing brought back a 90‚Äôs nostalgia, like when I first heard Mariah Carey‚Äôs‚ÄúAlways Be My Baby‚ÄĚ or K-Ci and JoJo‚Äôs‚ÄúAll My Life‚ÄĚ. June‚Äôs Diary can really sing. Honestly, I didn‚Äôt know what to expect from the interview and for the first time in a long while I was pretty nervous. You know, the whole Kelly Rowland and Frank Gatson connection and then the bi-proxy¬†Beyonce connection. It‚Äôs nerve wrecking. Once we greeted, the nerves left and I was left chatting with five of the most beautiful women in the industry and they were all so pleasant and warm. I could tell they‚Äôd been interviewing all day, so I knew that my interview, being the last, had to not be a snooze.
The ladies of June‚Äôs Diary found their way into the spotlight on Kelly Rowland‚Äôs‚ÄúChasing Destiny,‚ÄĚ a docuseries featured on BET earlier this year. All from different states, the girls auditioned, performed, collaborated and ultimately sung their way into what has been dubbed as‚Äėone of the best girl groups of all time‚Äô by Frank Gatson, an industry legend and choreographer, who serves as a mentor and creative director to the girls. Their debut single ‚ÄúL.A.N.C.E.‚ÄĚ has become a fan favorite, leaving everyone highly anticipating their full length project.Once we began our conversation, it was clear to me why these girls were chosen. ‚ÄėChasing Destiny‚Äô? That was so earlier this year, June‚Äôs Diary has found destiny‚Ķ
I don’t think you all are ready for June’s Diary! The ladies are about to storm. Continuing promo week, Live Nation TV has released their exclusive interview with the ladies along with a stunning photoshoot, shot by Cara Robbins. Click on the images to view in HQ.
When Kelly Rowland’s TV talent search Chasing Destiny first aired back in April, it was immediately clear that this was not another American Idol. Rather than simply finding fresh faces, the show brought five young women together with the goal of helping them grow as a team. In place of judgement and critique, there was personality and heart. And instead of forcing viewers through countless rounds of trials and eliminations, it challenged its new stars to navigate the steep, at times rocky road to creative success, with some help of one of the best in the biz.
With one smash hit season under it’s belt, Chasing Destiny the show has now officially given rise to June’s Diary the group. Made up of vocal powerhouses Brienna DeVlugt, Shyann Roberts, Gabrielle Carreiro, Ashly Williams, and Kristal Lyndriette, June’s Diary undeniably follows in the footsteps of Rowland’s alma mater, Destiny’s Child; harmonies are key, rhythm and flow crucial, looks are coordinated, and all of the members are more than capable of holding down the lead. Thus far, the quintet has thoroughly crushed a cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling,”mastered the art of the girl-power anthem with “L.A.N.C.E.”, and cut a legit banger with “All of Us.”
With the details surrounding June’s Diary’s debut album still forthcoming, we figured it was time to get the ladies together for a post-show chat. Over the course of one whirlwind morning this summer, we asked Brienna, Shyann, Gabrielle, Ashly, and Kristal to give us a firsthand look at their personal style. Below, they each explain how their fashion icons, dream collaborators, favorite concerts, and most beloved outfits came together to form one unstoppable new R&B group.
Original Destiny’s Child member, LeToya Luckett, took the time to speak with CNikky about her former bandmate, Kelly Rowland’s new group, June’s Diary.
Have you seen Kelly Rowland’s new show, Chasing Destiny? And if so, what do you think of June’s Diary?
‚ÄúI‚Äôve absolutely seen the show and I think it‚Äôs amazing!¬† I think it‚Äôs great that people get to see Kelly‚Äôs personality.¬† Alot of people don‚Äôt know how funny she is.‚ÄĚ
Can you give some advice to June’s Diary, or any new girl group?
‚ÄúYou have to be a team player. I think that‚Äôs where people probably get it confused. Sometimes people come in thinking this is just going to be a stepping stone for me. But, as a group you have to understand that you‚Äôre apart of a team.¬† As long as everybody is playing their part, that‚Äôs when you get greatness out of it.¬† And communication, especially with women.¬† I think with us we were so young and we didn‚Äôt know how to communicate our feelings, let alone emotions and stuff like that.¬† So, I would say communication, don‚Äôt be catty and petty, don‚Äôt be crabs in a barrel and be a team player.‚ÄĚ
